Mr. Jack DeLorenzo is much more than a This yearbook is dedicated to Mrs.

vice-principal; he is a dear friend. Through Florence Ely because, as it was stated by

his consistent attendance at sports and one of her students, "She cares about

social events, his presence at school, and everything." Whenever you walk into Mrs.

his "leadership" at student council meetings, Ely's classroom, you will find her helping

he has touched the lives of all.. Mr. "D" has somebody. She treats every student with

worked for the last six years at completely patience, good humor, and respect. Without

molding his first ojaduating class. He has her guidance and the countless hours she

always shown his concern, from his words has cheerfully contributed, the 1992

of "wisdom" following a chronic bout of Tessahoc could not have been completed,

senioritis to such personal remarks as, "Isn't Mrs. Ely exemplifies all the qualities of an

that skirt a little tight?" Mr. "D" has proven to excellent teacher and everything that is

be one step ahead of us all. special about Cohasset High School

WE, THE CLASS OF 1992, WOULD LIKE TO DEDICATE THE 1992
TESSAHOC YEARBOOK TO MRS. ELY AND MR. DELORENZO BECAUSE OF
ALL THAT THEY HAVE DONE FOR US. WE WILL NEVER FORGET THEM.

"If I were a swan, I'd
If I were a train, I'd

be late.

And if I were a good man, I'd talk, to you more often than I
do.

If I were asleep, I cotdd dream.
If I were afraid" I could hide,

JOURNAL OF A POWDERPLTFER
Day one

"This, ladies, is a football", patiently explained Coach Leary.
When Coach Franey silently nodded in agreement, I knew we
were off to a good start. In addition, nobody asked what we were
to do with it. We all looked at the ball with the highest reverence
and eagerly awaited the moment when we, too, would be able to
hold it. Inevitably, the moment arrived and it was spectacular. A
few dozen bold young women ventured onto the field, ready for
anything. Having distributed the balls, the coaches sat back in
order to assess the situation.

Truthfully, the majority of my classmates appeared aptly
skilled in the art of playing football. I sat back for an instant,
impressed. However, from off in the distance, a wail of utter
mortification penetrated the eardrums of all those present. "I
broke a nail!" it cried. Nobody paid much attention; we just
wanted to play some ball. Let me stop here and address the fact
of women playing football. Is it not a man's sport? Do we have the
right to hold the sacred, immitation pigskin ball? Could we
compare what we called "football" to what football really was? I
answer all of these questions with one statement: we weren't the
Patriots and we didn't intend to be. Flutie wasn't in sight, we
couldn't tackle, and we weren't paid a hefty salary to play the
sport. The differences began there and ended at about the fifty
yard line.

BLACK HISTORY MONTH

February is Black "History Month!
Throughout the United States people
celebrate the accomplishments of scien-
tists, teachers, inventors, and other
professional blacks. Only one month
(the shortest month) of recognition for
over four centuries of achievements Is
this really enough time to showcase the
contributions of the African- A meri-
cans? In the 28/29 days, are all of the
contributing black Americans acknowl-
edged?

The answer to both of these
questions is "NOT Hundreds of black
achievers remain unknown because in
the short time slot alotted for black
history education, teachers feel that
they must teach about the famous
names: Dr. Martin Luther King. Jr . Har-
riet Tubman. Fredrick Douglass, etc.
Due to the pressure to inform students
before the 28 days are up. only the
most prominent black Americans are
recognized.

For example, do you know who
Garrett A Morgan is? I didn't think so.
He was an inventor who made two of
the most important modern conven-
tions. The traffic light and gas mask
were both the ingenious creation of this
black man. Without the aide of another
black man. you would only be able to
read this article by sunlight. Lewis H.
Latimer helped Edison in his invention
of the light bulb, but you've probably

The Health Craze

One can't escape the health craze Ifs every-
where: on videocassettes, in health spa commer-
cials, in magazine advertisements, at the
workplace, in school, and at home. Everywhere
one looks, it seems, there is a reminder that You
Can Be In Better Shape. Or someone offers the
advice, "Say no to drugs." Or a carton of nonfat
milk sits beside a granola bar, making one won-
der, "What happened to the milk and cookies?"

What happened? Throughout the 8C s, Ameri-
cans have become more and more health -con-
scious, until, seemingly, the pursuit of happiness
has been replaced with the pursuit of non-fried
foods, Richard Simmons and Jane Fonda, drug
consellors and every lose-weight- quick program
imaginable. Once limited to people who refused
to eat anything that used to walk, the health craze
has now touched almost everyone in one way or
another.

never heard his name either

Black history recognition was
originally only given a week, so clearly
it has come a long way But iust as
that week evolved into a month, the
month must somehow evolve into a
year All year long students should be
taught about the achievements of
black Americans just as they are
taught that Colombus discovered
America and George Washington was
the first president of the United States
As Mrs Patricia Brown, the Cohasset
METCO coordinator, stated, black his-
tory education "should be infiltrated
through English. Social Studies. Science
and all the other subjects. It seems as
if society is trying to cram all of our
achievements into one short period '
Upon proposing that black ac-
complishments should be recognized
throughout the year. I am not saying
that Black History Month should im-
mediately be eliminated For now it is
the only hope students have for learn-
ing about the other part of history
Ultimately, though, we should be
working toward a combination of the
two differnt histories (black and
white) so that courageous soldiers such
as Sgt William Carney, who was
awarded the Congressional Medal of
Honor for his bravery in the Civil War.
can be acknowledged in the country he
jeopardized his Life for!

RELEASE DAY BLUES

Up until a few years ago, release
days were a joyous occasion. Stu-
dents happily skipped two periods
and enjoyed a hearty meal In the
school cafeteria. At that time,
however, a new idea hit the school
forcing everyone to hart all seven
periods with no lunch. There are
several reasons why tfcfc format is
still followed: it gives all the teach-
ers an o p portunity to see their
pupils; the lunch rootndoesn't have
to make aa many lunches, and home-
work can be assigned to everyone.
Many students, nowever, do not
like the change. Ifs understandable
that teachers like the thirty minute
classes because it allows work to be
continued from Wednesday to Fri-
day, and on this point it is hard to

argue against them The exclusion
of lunch from the school day, how-
ever, is unnecessary. The admini-
stration allows students to eat lunch
if they have a study Late in the day,
but, to those without such a study it
is unavailable. The solution to this
would be to have a lunch after all
periods, by grade. This would
shorten the periods but fill our
hungry stomach s.

WAR in the

GULF

Many people have looked upon the current Persian Gulf
Crisis wrth great skepticism. The nation seems to be divided,
some people urging further U.S. military action, and others
condemning the government for actions already taken. The
sending of some 300,000 troops in August because of Saddam
Hussein's invasion of Kuwait arouses several questions. What
were the members of the United States government thinking
when they sent troops to the Gulf? Surely, they coukjnt have
thought that the presence of foreign troops in Hussein's
backyard would provoke complaisance on Hussein's parti
Consider also, the main objective for sending American troops
to the Gulf. Was it to liberate Kuwait, or was it to guarantee an
ample supply of petroleum in future years?

In the beginning, some people may have argued that the
United States government overstepped its bounds by involv-
ing itself in the Gulf crisis. However, with Iraq's recent
bombings of Israel and its attempts to bomb Saudi Arabia, it
becomes dear that Saddam Hussein's power must be re-
duced, if not destroyed. The people of Israel simply cannot go
on wondering if they will be bombed or not Another reason for
further U.S. miGtary action would be Hussein's inexcusable
dumping of millions of barrels of oil into the waters of the Gulf.
Although Hussein dumped the oil to prevent the landing of
American ships on shore, his disregard for wildlife and the
world ecology, creates an onimous question. If Hussein can
destroy nature wrth no compunction, what will his military
policies toward the United States be like in an all-out war?

PAINT MURALS

A group of 17 art students from Cohasset High
School have undertaken a unique project. They
have returned to their old elementary school, the
Deer Hill School, and designed and painted mu-
rals in the hallways. The students involved are
Alix Ash, Abbie Barrett, Jack Beddows, Cecilia
Candia, Claudia Candia, Sara Corbert, Corey De-
Santis, Crispian Flood, J. Gaston, Val Gill, Alyson
James, Jon Maael, Art Meachum, Gregg Noune,
Jake Powell, Carrie Ripley, and Rachel Snow.

This project was inspired by Deer Hill principal
Ken Ekberg, who proposed that a group of high
school artists help to "spruce up" the school. This
modest proposal has blossomed into a marvelous
learning experience for the high schoolers and for
the elementary students as well.
